Kahukura Gallery was launched on December 22nd 2007 in Gisborne Te Tairawhiti, The East Coast of Aotearoa NZ.
The first place in the world to greet the Sun.
Kahukuras beginnings was just two days after the 6.6 Earthquake; which struck in the evening while installing the works for the opening exhibition. Amazingly nothing was broken, the two metre long steel and totara sculpture of a hammerhead shark. Mangopare didnt flinch! It was a scary start but a memorable experience!
Kahukura was opened amongst scary stories of the EQ, and slowly... the fear gradually disappeared ...and like they say the rest is history. It’s been an interesting journey so far...
